Thanksgiving is here and it’s time to break out that “gobble gobble” sweater your Great-aunt Mae knit for you a hundred years ago and revel in candied yams, stuffing, sweet potato casseroles, cranberry sauce, and the star of the show: Turkey. Because you’re going to need all your energy for Black Friday. Yes, one day after professing thanks and contentment, we rush into stores to buy anything and everything at low low prices! What a time to be alive.
We’ve rounded up some ads to share with you because if a holiday isn’t preceded by an ad, is it even a holiday?
You’re not alone if Target’s crazy lady is your spirit animal. Maria Bamford played the crazy lady in a series of Black Friday ads from Target where she doles out tips on how to survive Black Friday. Don’t let the pearls fool you, crazy lady had some stellar tips: check the weather, make a list and check it thrice, visualize your path, and our favourite, use a utility belt to carry all the essentials you’ll need while shopping. What a shame it would be to be stuck in the soda aisle and realize you left your polycarbonate micro folding lawn chair at home.
This was GENIUS. Kohl’s used the two things we hate to love the most: parodies and viral videos, to create what is arguably one of their best ads. 2011 was the year that Rebecca Black released her single, “Friday” (#blessed) and as if it’s mere existence wasn’t glorious enough, Kohl’s gifted us with a parody version. And as you know, a parody is the gift that keeps on giving.
Ryan Seacrest. Ariana Grande. Martha Stewart. Jessica Simpson. Are we sure this was not an awards show afterparty? What better way to get people throwing wads of cash at your cashier than harnessing the power of celebrity.
Side-note: Please don’t throw wads of cash at cashiers.
